As a Civil Marriage Celebrant, I am often asked by couples “How Do I Write My Wedding Vows?” So many people find it hard to put into words how they feel, or they are overly worried about how they will sound and what people will think. As well as thinking about what to say, many couples can feel anxious about ‘public speaking’ and initially think they want very short vows to get through it as quickly as possible. But when I discuss with couples how the ceremony will flow, how special they will feel, and the meaning of their wedding vows, they start to feel more relaxed and even enjoy the process of writing from their heart. These words are some of the most intimate you’ll ever pen. Not only do they represent the passion and respect you have for your partner today, but they also hold promises for the future.
But where do you begin?
How do you sum up a love that will last a lifetime? If you do find yourself unsure of how to even start writing your wedding vows, you can find inspiration in books, on the internet and from real wedding examples which can be romantic, funny, religious, traditional, short etc., but all prime for personalisation. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to put your heart on the page, but with some time and reflection, you can do it.
I’ve witnessed all types of beautiful and ‘straight from the heart’ personal vows which can make even the toughest guest in the crowd shed a tear. Often couples who have already been together for some time and have shared life experiences, children, and ups and downs; will tailor their vows to thank their partner for their support and the life they have already shared with further promises and commitments made about continuing a loving future together. There’s been couples (well especially grooms) who will talk about some of the fun and frustrating things they may have inflicted upon their partner and the relationship, but with a laugh and sign of appreciation, words of love, respect and thankfulness usually flow.
In conclusion, wedding vows are simply your heart felt opportunity to publicly acknowledge your life partner and to tell them how you feel. It’ll be one of the most special and memorable parts of the wedding ceremony. For some added inspiration, here’s a few wedding vow quotes to help get you thinking!
